South Willard is pleased to present Pedido, a solo exhibition of over 50 works by Los Angeles-based artist Lizette Hernández.
The exhibition moves through ceramic sculpture, silver jewelry, photography and the artist’s personal collection of sacred ephemera. Ceramic tile paintings framed in figured maple line the walls and mirror the space. The tile paintings, alluding to topographic maps, lay out psychic landscapes in warm and cool tones. Ceramic sculptures, organized methodically and resembling botanical specimens, are displayed alongside found rocks, dried leaves and sea moss on the iconic South Willard tables. Each piece retains the imprint of the artist’s touch and is charged with its own life and power.
Sueño Fluvial (fluvial dream), a wall-mounted ceramic relief framed in soft maple, features metallic blue glazes that catch and reflect ambient light. The work is comprised of four square tiles arranged in a grid; a network of raised surface ridges, extending across the grid’s seams, creates a cohesive image in the stoneware that is both botanical and abstract.
Caderas (hips), a roughly symmetrical ceramic sculpture with aqua glaze, balances itself on three points. The sculpture evokes natural forms such as coral, eroded rock, and a pelvic bone, with multiple rounded holes that pierce the surface creating an airy, lace-like effect. The surface is textured with gentle bumps, folds, and undulations creating subtle variations in tone. The glaze traverses the bumps and folds, flowing between cream in raised areas and deep blue-green in the recesses.
Lizette Hernández (b. 1992, Los Angeles, California) is a first-generation Mexican-American artist primarily working in sculpture. She received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles. Through a collaboration with clay, she is led by listening to the land and investigates expressions of inheritance and regeneration. Hernández highlights and explores the intersections of plant medicine, floral anatomies, religious iconography, and natural healing practices. Through the use of plant matter in pit firings, raku, and fusing elements such as recycled glass, her process embraces both tradition and experimentation.
Recent exhibitions include the Long Beach Museum of Art, Charles Moffett Gallery in New York, PTT Space in Taipei City, Craft Contemporary Museum in Los Angeles. She is a current arts educator at ArtworxLA, and a recipient of the Mohn LAND Grant (2024).
